Northern Caravaggesque painter of the 17th century
An old man with a candle, oil on canvas, 81 x 65 cm, framed, (Wo)
Provenance: European private collection. The painting depicts an old man resembling representations of St. Peter. The face, marked by deep wrinkles and shadows, is lit by a candle. In the background one can see an open book. Paintings featuring such a spectacular treatment of light spread soon after Caravaggio’s death and were highly popular among collectors. The candlelight produces a strong chiaroscuro and suggestive light effects. The face is rendered in an explicitly naturalistic fashion, which suggests a northern artist sojourning in Rome between 1610 and 1630.
